Pass the Butter – What’s Keeping Advanced AI on the Slow Path to Business Value?

If you’re a fan of Rick and Morty, you’ll remember the episode where Rick creates a sentient robot, but it learns to its horror that its sole task in the world is to pass the butter. It’s a hilarious yet poignant commentary on how we often underutilize technology that has far greater potential.

Generative AI is that sentient robot. While gen AI is capable of transforming industry and government, driving innovation, and solving complex problems, many organizations are still using it to “pass the butter”—applying it to trivial tasks or failing to integrate it meaningfully into their workflows.  So, what’s keeping advanced AI on the slow path to business value? Let’s break it down.

1. Lack of Benefits-Driven Planning

AI adoption often flounders when it isn’t guided by a clear, benefits-driven methodology. Organizations may deploy AI tools without defining how success will be measured or what value the technology should deliver. Organizations should instead concentrate off the bat on the functionality they want AI to deliver and focus on developing AI plans around well-defined benefits.

2. Project Orientation

Even with well-defined benefits, AI investments can falter due to the lack of a project-oriented mindset. AI projects need to have realistic strong management commitment, adequate funding, suitable resources, and well-planned milestones, all driven by strong and supportive leadership.

3. Hope for the Easy Path

It can be tempting to embrace the enthusiasm of tech companies selling off-the-shelf AI solutions. The truth is that these often fail to deliver measurable business benefits without significant customization. Organizations may adopt generic AI tools such as personal assistants or meeting summarizers expecting quick wins, only to realize they need substantial adaptation to suit their processes. Ensure that all of your AI investments are subject to a rigorous cost-benefit challenge.

4. Integration Challenges

Legacy systems and data silos create barriers to seamless AI integration. Organizations often discover that integrating AI with their existing infrastructure poses significant challenges. Unfortunately, there may be no easy fix to this. However, this problem is common to most organizations implementing production AI and as a result, many tools and de facto standards are emerging to help AI projects overcome this issue. In the meantime, projects must incorporate this challenge into their budget to ensure that projects may be deployed to production with predictable costs.

5. Talent Shortages

AI expertise is in high demand and short supply. Organizations lacking data scientists and AI engineers often resort to perpetual experimentation without progressing to deployment. For example, an HR group may experiment with an AI-based resume reviewer but abandon production efforts due to a lack of AI-savvy engineers. The key is to hire strategically and augment in the early days with professional services as necessary. While building the team, ensure that the projects selected are compatible with the team’s size and maturity.

6. Cultural Reluctance

Employees may resist AI adoption due to fear of job displacement or skepticism about AI’s reliability. A legal team, for instance, might be wary of AI contract review tools, preferring manual review processes despite AI’s ability to reduce errors and save time. Overcoming cultural barriers requires clear communication, training, and showcasing early wins.

Embracing AI Beyond Butter Passing

None of these barriers are insurmountable. The real power of AI—beyond trivial tasks—comes when organizations tackle these challenges head-on. With strong leadership, clear goals, and a bit of patience, AI initiatives can evolve from “pass the butter” to delivering the full potential of their business value.

So don’t let your AI projects become self-aware butter passers. Aim higher. Focus on real business value and watch your AI investments go from single-purpose novelties to game-changing tools.
